Baltimore Ravens All-Pro defensive back and former Alabama All-American Marlon Humphrey debuts his film ilm about the legacy of Alabama football "Nothing But A Winner" tomorrow.
“‘Nothing But A Winner’ chronicles the rise of the greatest college football program in the history of the sport – the University of Alabama Crimson Tide," the film’s web site states. “But behind the ruthless competition in the Southeastern Conference and Alabama’s staggering number of National Championships lies a deeper story: the making of men. At the heart of Alabama’s dynasty are two coaching giants – Bear Bryant and Coach Nick Saban – who, in very different eras, built a culture defined not just by winning, but by relentless transformation.”
Alabama has dominated college football in the last century: 18 national championships, 30 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships, and 447 players drafted into the NFL. Well known for the greatest run in modern memory under legendary Coach Nick Saban, the origin story of this culture of winning was pioneered by Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.
“Coach Bryant would be the person I think is the greatest coach of all time. He won playing conventional football. He won running the wishbone. He won having a passing-type offense when he had those kinds of players,” said Saban. “But I think about the things he established from an intangible standpoint—discipline, toughness, people being responsible to do their job. I’ve always heard how his leadership helped his players be more successful at whatever they chose to do.”
Through first-hand accounts from barrier-breaking players spanning five decades, the film explores the culture of relentless commitment that turns raw recruits into national champions. From Bryant's integration of Black players during the Civil Rights era to Saban's modern-day streak of total dominance, Nothing But A Winner highlights how buying into Alabama's process means you're destined to be nothing but a winner.
“We always talked about commitment, discipline, effort, toughness, and pride,” said Jalen Hurts, former Alabama quarterback and Super Bowl LIX MVP with the Philadelphia Eagles. “To think about how far this university has come, think about the support we all show one another regardless of color.”
Two legendary Alabama football families came together to tell the story of this legacy. Marlon Humphrey, an All-American defensive back under Saban and four-time Pro Bowler currently with the Baltimore Ravens, executive-produced and financed the majority of the project, alongside his sister and co-producer Breona. Their father, Bobby Humphrey, a former two-time First-Team All-Pro in the NFL and All-American running back at Alabama, is an integral voice in the film.
"For me, living out this legacy isn't just about what I do on the field, it's about who I am off it, too. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to represent something bigger than myself: the values, the work ethic, and the resilience that were passed down to me at Alabama and that I am now living in the NFL,” said Marlon Humphrey. “I feel a responsibility to turn around and challenge and support the next generation, which I am excited to do with this film.”
The Humphrey family has a great legacy at Alabama; their father Bobby Humphrey was a star running back for the Crismon Tide from 1985 to 1988. In 1986, he set a school record with 1,471 rushing yards. In four seasons with the Crimson Tide, he recorded 3,420 career rushing yards, caught 60 passes for 523 yards, and scored a total of 40 touchdowns.
His son (Marlon) joined the program in 2014 as a redshirt freshman; he went on to play two full seasons at Alabama where he recorded 81 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, five interceptions, three forced fumbles, and 13 pass deflections, before being selected as the No. 16 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.
It also features former Alabama Crimson Tide players like C.J Mosley, Sylvester Croom, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Jonathan Allen, Ozzie Newsome, Jaylen Waddle, Jalen Hurts,, and DeVonta Smith.
