As we inch closer to Omaha, the SEC has released the Week of May 9th's players of the week for baseball.
Player of the Week: Hayden Yost, Florida
Florida’s Hayden Yost drove in multiple runs in all three games of the Gators’ first sweep at South Carolina since 1996 and the first road sweep overall since 2021. Yost's eight RBI led the entire SEC this past week, and he added at least one hit and scored a run in all three contests over the weekend. Yost homered twice in the series en route to totaling eight RBI and six runs scored. He drove in three runs apiece in both games two and three and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage while playing every inning in center field in the series.
Co-Pitcher of the Week: Zach Root, Arkansas
Arkansas’ Zach Root twirled a career-long eight scoreless innings and tallied a career-high 11 strikeouts in the Hogs’ 9-0 series-opening shutout win against Texas. The left-hander allowed only two hits and issued a pair of walks, logging his team-leading fourth quality start and earning his team-high sixth win of the season in the process. Behind Root’s dominant performance on the mound, the Razorback pitching staff combined for a two-hit shutout against the top ranked Longhorns.
Co-Pitcher of the Week: Anthony Eyanson, LSU
LSU’s Anthony Eyanson fired a brilliant complete-game three hitter on Saturday night in a 2-1 victory at Texas A&M. He limited the Aggies to just one run on three hits in 9.0 innings with one walk and 14 strikeouts, allowing only one Texas A&M hitter to advance beyond second base. Eyanson retired the first nine Texas A&M batters in order, and he did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. He retired seven of the last eight Aggies he faced to complete the outing.
Co-Freshman of the Week: Christian Chatterton, Auburn
Auburn’s Christian Chatterton earned two wins in as many starts and was the only pitcher in the league to earn a pair of wins last week. He totaled 9.0 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks. Chatterton pitched 3.0 scoreless innings to start the series finale at No. 7 Tennessee, earning the win in the series clincher. He began the week with 6.0 scoreless innings and registered a season-high 10 strikeouts in the midweek win against Samford, retiring 18 of the 19 batters he faced to help lead Auburn to its fifth shutout of the season.
Co-Freshman of the Week: Brodie Johnston, Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt’s Brodie Johnson was 6-for-12 (.500) to help lead the Commodores to a series win vs. Alabama. He hit the game-tying, two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth of Sunday’s win. He then scored the winning run on Braden Holcomb’s walk-off homer to end the game. The freshman also played a big role in Vanderbilt’s 12-2, run-rule victory over the Crimson Tide on Friday. Johnston went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
